Facts About Great White Sharks

The Great White Shark is also known as Carcharodon carcharias or ‘œragged tooth’ in Greek. The size of the average Great White Shark  is 10-15 feet. The Great White Shark was dramatized in the movie Jaws and  created a stir or rather hysteria amongst the swimming community.

Fact 1. There are no fossils of the Great White Shark as their bone structure is made of cartilage.

Fact 2.  The Great White Shark is known as the apex predator, which simply means they sit at the head of the table in the food chain. Great White Sharks are the only animals Man have not been able to tame.

Fact 3.  The Great White Shark has well-developed sensory organs for detecting prey. It has a highly developed olfactory organ for sniffing out prey. It is also able to detect the electrical fields of any living creatures swimming nearby.

Fact 4.  The 300 teeth of the Great White Shark have been developed specifically for the tearing of prey. The teeth in the bottom jaw hold the victim while the teeth in the upper jaw tear the victim apart.

Fact 5. The meat of the Great White Shark is not recommended for consumption due to high mercury levels.

Fact 6. Since 1999, the Australian government has banned the fishing or culling of Great White Sharks due to extinction concerns. Most countries have banned the Great White Shark for similar reasons.

Fact 7.  Great White Sharks do not eat humans but prefer seals for their main meal. The tendency of sharks attacking is only for sampling purposes or accidental attacks when humans were mistaken for seals.

Fact 8.  Great White Sharks are predominantly grey in color but are called white due to their white underbellies.

Fact 9. They have such powerful sensory organs that they are able to detect tiny amounts of  blood up to three miles away.

Fact 10.  Sharks can go for three months without food after a large meal.

    ‘Great white sharks are the only animal Man has not been able to tame.’

    So there are domesticated lions, Blue whales and giant squid?
