Facts About Astronomy

Astronomy is a large subject of discussion among scientists and researchers. The Universe can be very unpredictable and open to deeper searches and studying. But the evolution of Universe is pretty complex, the reason being based on that there are some pretty unbelievable facts raised after thousand years of observation and learning. Here are only 10 of them:

1. The Sun is far from Earth in July and while being closer to it in January. This fact can be slightly confusing, but it’s true. The explanation for it being, that’s its hotter in the summer and colder during the winter, which supports the statement above that it’s the Sun’s way of sparing its light. During the summer, the light is more compact and the Sun’s energy is more receptive. During the winter season, the light is spread on a larger surface, minimizing the Sun’s energy.

2. Pluto lost its official title as a planet for being ‘œuntidy’. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union leveled down Pluto from being considered a planet to being a “dwarf planet”. This announcement comes after numerous scientists had come to the conclusion that Pluto successfully meets only 2 criteria out of 3 for a full sized planet. Officials stated that Pluto lost its official name as a planet is because it became more gravitational and didn’t clear its “neighborhood”.

3. Galileo thought Saturn was not one, but three planets. Galileo started his research in 1600; after 10 years of observing Saturn, Galileo stated that he saw something unusual and the planet was not just a single planet, but that it had two moons on each side which didn’t orbit. However, a few years later nothing was found regarding the other two ‘œmoons’.

4. Mars’ atmosphere weighs under 1% comparing to Earth. Ever wonder why the planet Mars is linked to dust storms and unexplainable thunderstorms? Well, the thin atmosphere of Mars is favors unpredictable weather which makes it more susceptible to nature’s tricks and changes. The temperature differences are calculated between -40 Celsius degrees and 40 Celsius degrees within just a few days.

5. The ‘œGreat Red Spot’ is a frequent gas storm on Jupiter which lasts for over three hundred years. Astronomists discovered that this storm is so large, that three planets of Earth’s size would fit within the ‘œGreat Red Spot’.

6. A black hole, significantly larger than the Sun, has appeared in the middle of the Milky Way Galaxy. Although this phenomena is still under research, many scientists have studied the appearance of black holes among galaxies and even created what is called a ‘œblack hole simulator’.

7. Earth is the only planet that has tectonic plates. This is a unique feature of our planet which has raised many questions for researchers. There are many papers studying the formation and evolution of the tectonic plates, however it is still unknown how these ‘œplates’ were created in the first place and what caused them.

8. Saturn is the only planet that can stand on water. All other planets’ density is larger than water except for the density of Saturn, which is lower than water, which means that if the density of Saturn were a tad bit higher, Saturn could potentially float.

9. The Sun is burning millions of tons of hydrogen every second; made entirely of gas, the Sun is burning hydrogen every second, which is turning into helium, and is the reason why the Sun has become such a powerful source of heat and light.

10. We can only see one face of the Moon from any one spot you’re standing in. What many do not know is, the ‘œunseen’ face of the Moon is called usually called “the dark side” and if you want to see it you’ll have to travel to the actual Moon yourself.
