JD Salinger was a famous American writer and novelist who passed away on January 27, 2010. He was the most secretive author yet famous who came into prominence in 1950 for his book- The Catcher in the Rye. This book is much loved by youngsters of every generation.

In the author’s circle, he is more famous for his short story concept which mainly revolved around the Caulfield families and the Glass. They mainly center round religious aspects and philosophical fundamentals. Here are some lesser known facts about J.D Salinger.

  • Jerome David Salinger first went to a school at Manhattan, which was his home town. Then in 1932, he was enrolled in a private school named McBurney but was expelled there within a year for poor academic performance. He finally graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy of Wayne in Pennsylvania.

  • He had spent about the last fifty years of his life by just pleading to the world to let him be on his own. But with his demise, his life was again dragged under the limelight and fame. There are flying stories about his relationships and his intense idiosyncrasy which attacked him repeatedly.

  • His family and friends have acted adversely to his wish by not letting the media break through his secrets. Unfortunately a lot about him have been exposed after his death. This has somehow lowered the devotion and respect of his fans that they had for him.

  • Salinger’s mettle in writing was proven from his three short stories and a novel which were printed. There were more 22 short stories which were published but were never made into books. Hence his work is not available as such.

  • A hoax also says that Salinger had continued his writings even in his later decades. His representatives have said it all in 1980 to court deposition. None of his works were ever flashed to the world.

  • His most recent magazine story was in 1924 named ‘œHapworth 16’ which was likely to be published into a book. There is no fate of these under-published or unpublished books. An unlikely idea but Salinger’s estate is worthy enough to publish his writings.

  • Salinger had been drafted into the US Army in 1942. It was during the time of World War II. During the war, he took part in about 5 European campaigns which also included D-Day attack of Normandy.

  • In 1945, while he was still in Europe, healing his wounds when he came across a French doctor named Sylvia. He married her in the same year but unfortunately divorced her just a year later.

  • J.D had high dreams of promoting his writings into films. His wish was recognized in 1950 when a motion picture was released under the Samuel Goldwyn Studios. The movie was ‘œMy Foolish Heart’ which was based on the book ‘œUncle Wiggily in Connecticut’, written by Salinger.

  • Although Salinger had high hopes from Hollywood, he was turned down by many studios and was quite disappointed by the way he had been treated. Hence he restrained from selling screen rights further to any of his books.

He got a significant place in the history of contemporary American Literature. He always loved to conceal himself and his life from the rest of the world. He wanted the readers to enjoy his writings but never appreciated critics or followers or fans.
