Pugs are an adorable breed of dogs that have a wrinkly flat face and big dark eyes with what looks like a frown. They are very small creatures and playful pets to have. Pugs are attention seekers who rarely bark and love to be around human beings. They are almost square in shape and weigh no more than 20 pounds. They have a tightly curled tail, black velvety ears.

Some of the interesting facts about pugs are:

Pugs have a regular life span like all other dogs of approximately 12-14 years and require little grooming as a pet, requiring as little as brushing once in a while.

Pugs are often described using the phrase ‘œmultum in parvo’ which translates to lot of dog in little space in Latin.

Historical studies have revealed that Pugs are one of the oldest breeds of dogs and considered a royalty. They are said to have originated in China at around 400 BC. They were supposedly bred in the Forbidden City by the royal family during the Tang and Yang Dynasties or during the Han Dynasty in 206 BC.

They have a short double coat and have a tendency to shed a lot. Investing in a good vacuum cleaner can be helpful to get rid of all the fur if you have a pug.

Pugs are not the best of swimmers because they have breathing problems and short legs.

Famous people who have owned pugs include Josephine (Napoleon’s wife), Marie Antoinette, Mary II of England, Queen Victoria, Goya (artist) etc. Marie Antoinette’s pug was named ‘˜Mops’, the German word for Pugs whom she had to leave behind at the age of 15 when she entered France marrying Louis XVI.

Pugs have an intelligent, loyal and charming personality. Training them can be a little difficult but they are mostly obedient and at times love to be playful and mischievous. They can also be great watchdogs.

They can be really addicted to sleeping and it could be really difficult to get a sleeping pug off its comfy couch. Pugs sleep as much as up to 14 hours a day. They also have a tendency to snore while sleeping.

When kept indoors, they are quiet and inactive thereby making them suitable as pets for people living in apartments or small homes.

They are not used to extremities of temperature and must be kept indoors during winters or harsh summers.

Pugs are loving creatures and also love being loved back in return. They need company at all times. They are even fond of other pugs and pug get-togethers!

The collective noun for a group of Pugs is called a ‘œgrumble’.

For those interested in keeping a pug or any pet dog, always adopt a dog and do not buy them from breeders. There are many homeless dogs in need of love and shelter and in adopting them from animal shelters or pet adoption centres is the best deed you could do. Pugs need constant companionship. Hence only adopt one if you’re really sure you can take care of one and not abandon them after a period of time.
