In the world of online and mobile communications, various terms are created by people across the globe for practical and various reasons.  One such term is “WBU” which refers to the phrase “what about you?”.  People who are into online chat rooms and texting for example are those that coin new words and terms for the benefit of other people who are also hooked in social networking.  Many of these terms and new words are acronyms or shortened words which basically make for faster communication over the internet or mobile device.  Instead of having to type long sentences and words, typing acronyms and internet lingos are preferred especially by the younger people.  In the case of WBU, it only takes three letters to type to get the message across and expect a response from the person on the other side of the line.

WBU can be used when someone asks the other person the same question that he/she was asked.  Instead of blurting out “what about you” on a chat room or replying with the whole phrase in a text message, one could just type WBU.  With this new term, typing is obviously faster and it can also get a faster response.  Whether one is using WBU as a text message or chatting online, the choice of using shortened phrases could be a practical one.  In sending out short messages, some network operators or mobile phone units may have certain character limits for this particular service.  Some online applications and platforms also have maximum lengths of what people can type for comments or responses.  With these restrictions, using acronyms and shortened messages becomes very practical.

The use of urban lingo and shortened phrases like WBU is also considered the “in” thing to do in this modern day and age.  Many young people who enjoy social networking sites and mobile texting use new words and urban lingo because it is what is expected of them from their peers and friends.
