What is Sookie Stackhouse?
Sookie Stackhouse is one of the main characters in the HBO series True Blood. True Blood is a show based on the popular vampire book series Southern Vampire Mysteries penned by author Charlaine Harris. In the book, Sookie narrates in the first person but in the series, it is just an unfolding of events without a narrator. In both, Sookie is the protagonist in the story.
The series is set in a fictional town, Bon Temps, Louisiana, where Sookie lives with her brother and grandmother. In the book, the present time is a time when humans and vampires are awkwardly trying to co-exist in society, but where vampires are still mainly treated as second class citizens. Being telepathic, Sookie is drawn to a vampire named Bill Compton primarily because he is the only person whose mind she cannot read. Because of the peace and quiet this gives her, Sookie finds her first romantic partner in Bill.
In the TV series, Sookie is played by Academy Award winning actress Anna Pacquin, who in the series speaks with a convincing deep southern drawl, despite actually being from New Zealand. Bill is played by Stephen Moyer, and incidentally, during filming, the two fell in love and got married.
Later on in the series more supernatural characters aside from vampires are revealed including werewolves and fairies, and with this, more information about Sookie Stackhouses’s history are revealed.
