What is Ovulation Pain?
Ovulation pain refers to the pain felt by women when they are said to be “ovulating”. Ovulation is the time when the “egg” is released from the woman’s ovaries. For most women, this phase of their regular menstrual cycle usually happens once a month. The duration of pain during ovulation usually varies from one woman to another. Some women also do not experience any pain during ovulation. For those who are experiencing pain, some have it for a few minutes only, while others may feel pain for as long as 2 days. And since ovulation occurs on the middle part of a woman’s menstrual cycle, it is also called “mid-cycle” pain. While most pain felt during ovulation is considered normal, some are associated with other conditions such as endometriosis, which involves irregularities in the woman’s fallopian tubes. Other women are also said to have some abnormal growth or fibroids in their ovaries that is why they feel some pain during the release of the egg.

Pain during ovulation is said to be caused by some form of blood leak from the ovaries during the egg-release. The blood from this menstrual event is said to cause some irritation to the abdominal wall, which is why pain is felt by some women. Pain is usually felt at the lower part of the abdomen on either right or left side, depending on which ovary releases the egg. Some women report the pain as sharp, while others have cramping type of pain. Pain duration also varies from one woman to another.

Aside from ovarian fibroids and endometriosis, there are also other conditions that may cause pain during ovulation. These conditions include salpingitis, ovarian cyst, ectopic pregnancies, chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, appendicitis, gastroenteritis, and ulcers among others. And since there are many conditions that are associated with ovulation pain, it is important for a woman experiencing this to consult with a licensed doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
