What is metaphysics?

Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that deals with the study of human existence or reality. This subject is often quite hard to define or explain even among experts because it deals with the subject of reality without a so-called scientific explanation. Questions involving what things are beyond the universe and what it’s like to exist are the basic concepts involved in the field of metaphysics. The concept of human existence in the universe is an integral part in the study of metaphysics and so is the concept of time, the reason for various things and phenomena, and the various possibilities that are given to every situation or experience in this world.

The term “metaphysics” is credited to Aristotle, a Greek philosopher. “Meta” is said to mean “beyond” or “after”. When ordinary physics refers to a science that can be proven or disproved by means of scientific experiments, any existence or condition that goes beyond this is associated with metaphysics. All qualities of human or object existence that seem to have no answers or cannot be proven are the main subjects in the study of metaphysics.

Aside from the reason of human existence, the concept of having a soul is also a big part of metaphysics. This important subject is also related to the study of paranormal activities and beliefs. Seeing ghosts and aliens are said to be conditions that can hardly be proven and so are part of the so-called metaphysical world. Astrology or the study of the movement of the stars and planets and its association to human personalities and traits are also part of metaphysics. For astrologers and fortune-tellers, a person’s traits and luck are said to be closely connected to the alignment of the stars and planets at the time of his/her birth. These theories or assertions cannot be proven through physical science and thus making them part of the metaphysical world.
