What is MagicJack?
Magicjack is a computer peripheral that can provide internet based phone services over the internet or voice over IP (VoIP) to the US and Canada. Magicjack is a USB device that can be plugged into the computer. On the other end of the device is a standard RJ-11 telephone jack that can be connected with any standard landline phone via a cord.

The Magicjack was invented by Dan Borislow, who is also the founder of YMAX Communications Corporation. Magicjack operates exclusively with YMAX as its service provider.

Magicjack was marketed under the claim that customer could now get at least 60 seconds up to a lifetime of savings, because of the unlimited calls that can be done through the Magicjack without having to pay a separate fee for long distance or international calls, all that is needed is the phone device and an internet connection. Aside from the actual hardphone, the Magicjack is similar in function to Skype (in Skype to Skype calls).

Magicjack users are assigned a dedicated number once they subscribe to the call services. The fee for Magicjack is at $50 for the first year, and $20 for every succeeding year thereafter. Because of the significantly lower fee vs. landline subscription, Magicjack is a popular alternative to landline phones.
