Lipitor

Lipitor is a generic term for atorvastatin. Atorvastatin is a member of a group of drugs known as HMG CoA reductase statins or inhibitors. These drugs bring down levels of LDL or bad cholesterol and triglycerides in the bloodstream and at the time, they increase amounts of HDL or good cholesterol. Lipitor is mostly used for treating dyslipidemia and prevention of cardiovascular diseases in people who are exposed or at high risk. Bruce Roth synthesized Lipitor for the first time back in 1985. Since then, the drug has gained popularity in the pharmaceutical industry to become a best-selling product. Similar to other inhibitors, Lipitor prevents the generation of LDL cholesterol. It does this by suppressing the enzyme responsible for production of cholesterol in the liver. Reduction of amounts of bad cholesterol in the body is important and keeps diseases related to coronary artery and cardiovascular diseases like stroke, heart attack and angina away.

Medical Uses of Lipitor

Lipitor is mostly used to lower risks of heart attack, stroke and other heart-related complications in patients of type two diabetes and coronary heart diseases. It is administered to children over 10 years old and adults. It is also used to treat dyslipidemia condition which occurs in patients who have higher amounts of lipids than normal in the blood. High amounts of lipids can lead to different disorder s or diseases. Lipitor should not be used by patients who are breast-feeding or pregnant or have atorvastatin allergy. People with liver ailments should also avoid Lipitor. Prior to taking Lipitor medications, it is important to let the doctor know whether the patient has a muscle weakness or pain, thyroid disorder, kidney or liver disease and if they take two or more alcoholic drinks each day. Occasionally, Lipitor may lead to conditions that breakdown skeletal tissue in muscles which cause kidney failure. Any unexplained muscle tenderness, weakness or pain accompanied by unusual fatigue, dark colored urine and fever should be reported to a doctor immediately.
