In 1991 a then university student, Linus Trovalds of the University of Helsinki in Finland began work on a UNIX system for computers that would be offered free or at minimal cost compared to other operating system. After creating the initial version, Linus then invited others to contribute in further developing the system as long as their work would be free. Today after many modifications, upgrades and revisions the system has become one of the most popular operating system mainly due to the functionality and adaptability that it affords users.

Linux systems are named after the Linux kernel which was written by the original creator of the system, Linus Trovalds. It is open source software which means anyone can freely access, use and modify it under a General Public License at no cost. Linux is the most popular among such operating systems and has been embraced by institutions, governments, companies and individuals for being cost effective as well as for allowing users to adapt the software to their specific requirements. Users can make adjustments to the system to suit their unique security, language, stability or other requirements which is not possible with other commercial operating systems. The government of Brazil is one of those leading in the use of Linux in its operations. Updates of the various versions of Linux are available for free to users through the internet and these will normally be more compatible with other applications and hardware.

Linux has developed over the years to become the most preferred operating system for servers with over 50% of servers worldwide running on Linux. With a steadily rising number of desktop users also opting for Linux operating systems, it has proved its worth to those who had initially dismissed it as a college hobby project that would not amount to anything much. With a constant flow of contributions from users and programmers the world over, Linux offers a great variety in terms of features and applications. One of the strongest points to its advantage is the fact that despite the large number of viruses, spyware and malware, there are none that have been known to successfully attack the Linux software. This makes it a great choice for those whose primary concern is security. Linux offers performance on networks and is capable of multitasking without compromising on either task.

It is however important to point out that Linux requires a fair amount of learning to be able to comfortable enjoy the many benefits and features it has to offer. Those who may not have the time or the patience will find it challenging to work with the Linux system. However it is usually worth the time it takes to learn especially for anyone who likes a challenge as opposed to having everything done for them. Though it is currently not at the same level with other operating systems such as Windows and Mac, Linux is well on its way to posing a serious challenge for the top position in the software industry.
