What is Kinesiology?

Kinesiology is the same as human kinetics, which means the scientific study of human movement. The word is derived from the Greek word kinesis, which means movement and kinein that means to move. Kinesiology is a regulated health profession in Canada. Kinesiology focuses on every aspect of human movements. Physiological, mechanical and psychological mechanisms are addressed in the study of human kinetics.

The study of human kinetics greatly applies to professions in rehabilitation medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, sports and exercise industries. One must be reminded that kinesiology is a scientific study and is not a preparation for clinical practice. However, finishing a degree in kinesiology can offer a strong background for the graduate study of biomedical research.

In the United States and some other countries, being a kinesiologist is not considered as licensed designation. On the other hand, trained people under this study may be involved in consulting services and conduct researches or develop policies on related applications. However, as mentioned earlier, kinesiology is a regulated health profession in Canada.

According to people who are experts in kinesiology, the study may be classified as pure or applied. The study that tries to find an understanding of human movement to investigate problems and to find out how to treat for these problems is considered as pure kinesiology. A particular method of treatment for these problems pertains to applied kinesiology.

Kinesiology is considered as a broad study and is not just a single discipline. In reality, this scientific study covers various disciplines. Although kinesiology covers many different branches of learning, it mainly focuses on human physiology, biomechanics, and anatomy. Other minor subjects that kinesiology focuses on are psychology, philosophy, ecology, and sociology of sports and exercise.

Minor subjects included in the study of human kinetics provide student broad comprehension on majority of things related to human movement. As an example, anatomy teaches students about the different parts of the body. Anatomy provides knowledge about bones, muscles, location of organs, and other information involving several parts of the body.

Physiology also provides students a better understanding on how different parts of the body move and work together. In biomechanics, a student is exposed in a more advance study of kinesiology. Student will learn the principles of engineering. This helps students gain a better comprehension of human physiology and its system’s limits.

Fully understanding the entire concepts of kinesiology requires a student to learn and study other related disciplines. Kinesiologists are often asked to deal with sportspersons or gym members. To be able to fully utilize their expertise, kinesiologists must also learn the philosophy, psychology and sociology of sports and exercise. Practitioners of kinesiology will help people to bring their fitness routine to the next level.

Choosing the field of kinesiology for study is a great alternative. Kinesiology helps a person understand how to achieve their body’s full potential. Practitioners of kinesiology may help athletes bring their game to its maximum. Moreover, the demand for kinesiologists is incredibly increasing. Presently, many people rely heavily on the applications of kinesiology to give solution to most of their physiological problems.
