What is Joffrey?

Joffrey refers to a dance company in Chicago that specializes in ballet.  Also known as The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, many people commonly refer to it as “The Joffrey”.  The company was founded in 1956 by Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino.

It was in Chicago back in 1957 when The Joffrey performed its first every major performance.  But New York City was the initial birthplace of The Joffrey Ballet.  In fact, while the dancers were already touring all across the US in the late 1950s, Mr. Robert Joffrey actually stayed in the city of New York to teach ballet lessons.  All these were intended for the funding needs of the touring dancers which were accompanied by Gerald Arpino.  The touring group started with only six ballet dancers but later grew to over 40 dancers.

Joffrey Ballet is considered one of the most popular and most successful ballet companies in the US.  In fact, The Joffrey was the first ever to get media and television exposure.  The Joffrey dancers were also among the firsts to perform at the White House at the time of then-first lady Jacqueline Kennedy.  Contributing to its popularity was the movie called “The Company” which was based on The Joffrey Ballet Company.  With all their achievements in the field of ballet and stage entertainment, The Joffrey dancers were also the firsts to get featured in the cover of Time magazine.

Today, being part of The Joffrey means world-class performance and quality ballet.  With 42 ballet dancers at present, the company is able to tour around the world and across the US. The company is also able to evolve in the form of Joffrey Academy of Dance which basically provides world-class training to interested pupils of different ages.  Graduates of this academy are known to have the best training and teachers in the ballet school industry.  All these have become possible because of the standards set in place by The Joffrey.
