What is INRI?
INRI are the initials you could find on the cross of Jesus Christ, right over His head. This was stated in the Bible specifically in the gospel of John chapter 19, verse 19. It is actually the Latin title which was written by Pontius Pilate, another prominent character in the Catholic accounts.

The INRI initials are acronyms for ‘Iesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm’ which is interpreted in English as Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. It is indicated that the English letter for ‘J’ was basically changed to ‘I’ while the letter ‘V’ was representing the letter ‘U’ for the English alphabet. Therefore, if you will be changing the said alphabets into their English forms, you would get ‘Jesus Nazarenus, Rex Judaeorum’.

It was accounted for that the very early church of the Catholics used the first letters of the inscription in order to represent the symbol of their faith. Therefore, you would see that in almost all the paintings depicting the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the INRI abbreviation is emphasized or highlighted. It is also worth noting that the title which Pontius Pilate basically wrote on the sign which was placed above the cross of Jesus was written in 3 varied languages. These are the Latin, Hebrew and Greek.

There are also other depictions of this title seen in other arts and items on Christianity especially in the Western world. There are certain crucifixes which you could see a type of parchment or ancient plaque which is placed above the cross. This is referred to as a titulus or title where the INRI letters are written in. However, there are also crucifixes and other Christian symbols which are showing the engraved or carved INRI above the head of the crucified Messiah. For the eastern Christians, they adapted the Greek version of the caption.
