What is FAAD?

‘FAAD’ refers to a “Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.”  In the field of medicine, a medical student/graduate becomes a fellow once he/she has completed his/her residency program.  In the case of dermatologists, the medical graduate or doctor will become part of the FAAD.

A fellowship in medicine usually takes about a year or more to finish.  This part of medical training depends on the medical specialty or field.  This training period also follows the medical residency program which may take at least two or three years to accomplish.  During the medical residency program, young doctors typically work under the supervision of senior doctors or specialists.  It is during this time that the general skills of doctors are taught and learned.  After the residency, the young doctors will then become fellows of their specific specialty.  In the case of the field of dermatology in the U.S., the fellowship is with the AAD or the American Academy of Dermatology.  This particular organization is the largest in the U.S. in terms of member doctors or dermatologists.  The said organization was founded back in 1938 and offers fellowships to dermatologists not only in the U.S. but also in Canada.

Many people encounter the acronym FAAD when seeing their dermatologist’s name in the clinic or hospital.  Having ‘FAAD’ after a doctor’s name simply means that this particular doctor is a fellow of the AAD.  A fellow of the AAD also signifies that a dermatologist is a member or is represented by the Academy and is a legitimate person to practice his/her special field. FAAD also means that a dermatologist has already passed the licensure examination for physicians.

Once a doctor has completed his/her residency program, he/she may now practice independently.  This simply means that a dermatologist or cardiologist, for example, is allowed to practice his/her profession without any supervision from senior specialists or doctors.
