What is ESU?

ESU refers to the Emergency Service Unit of the New York City police department.  Although it functions mainly in the New York City area, this particular unit also includes some jurisdictions outside of the state of New York.  As a service unit, the NYPD ESU or simply the ESU forms part of the Special Operations Division and is responsible for taking care of vital, emergency, and high-risk conditions that are beyond the scope of New York’s existing patrol units.

Through the ESU, the SWAT team is formed.  This Special Weapons and Tactics Team is responsible for providing protection, safety, and security for the people in cases where tactical operations are needed.  Situations that are very risky including those that involve hostages, dignitaries, VIP, crowd control require the services of a SWAT Team which is formed under the Emergency Service Unit of the police department.

Since all officers part of the ESU is involved in tactical operations and risky situations, they also undergo regular rigid training for their police and rescue work.  They also undergo several cross-training between different units of the police department to ensure that all of them are always prepared in emergency and high-risk situations.  Because constant and specialized training, becoming an ESU officer is not a walk in the park for many police officers.  One basic requirement to be part of the ESU is at least a 5-year experience of being a patrol officer.  With this kind of experience, one police officer is then one step closer to becoming part of the ESU.

Initial ESU training for new officers usually take almost two years to complete with skills and lessons taught in various fields including medical response and rescue operations.  Part of the medical courses is the certification of becoming an EMT or Emergency Medical Technician.  Other parts of ESU training include water rescue practice, building rescue simulations, and fire stoppage skills training among many others.
