EOBC stands for Ethernet Out of Band Channel, a communication line for network or LAN switches. Â The basic function of EOBC is to allow for all the cards connected to the network or switch to have a gateway for remote management. Â The Ethernet out of Band channel basically works as a remote switch management gateway or channel for easy and reliable networking.
In the case of Cisco’s switching technology, the Catalyst series is equipped with EOBC features. Â From the initial offering of Constellation up to Constellation II for example, data and hardware switching is made faster and more efficient by Cisco. Â One thing that made switching better is through the introduction of EOBC or the Ethernet Out of Band Channel. Â In the Catalyst switch series, the EOBC functions as a control bus for various switching modules. Through its communication with the NMP or Network Management Processor, the EOBC is able to secure and store important details regarding network configuration. Â Depending on the Catalyst series, the EOBC basically performs the same function and that is to allow switch and network management remotely. Â The communication channel provided by the network’s EOBC runs at approximately 100 megabytes per second half duplex.
Out-of-band computer or network management is a basic tool in the field of computing in terms of network configuration and maintenance. Â In the case of EOBC, a network administrator will be able to manage the cards connected to the switching board or even manage several servers connected to it. Â The best thing about EOBC is that it does not require connected machines to be switched on or to have a running operation system. Â Remote management is still made possible in out-of-band management systems like EOBC. Â With the help of an internal or built-in power supply, EOBC systems will run and help administrators with switch management for the entire network.
