Efficacy in Education

Efficacy is the ability to generate an effect. In education, the term implies the personal belief among school administrators and teachers that their activities have a direct impact on the performance of students. With numerous strategies, programs, administrative responsibilities and teaching approaches competing for teacher’s attention, educators always have to balance their efforts against the results generated by their activities. Educators that demonstrate efficacy find effective techniques from good research. Their opinions are often based on things that work well in classrooms. When there is an indication of rising understanding among their students, they celebrate with them. There is nothing as good as a teacher knowing that his or her teaching is having a positive effect on a student’s academic performance. The best way for educators to improve their efficacy is through careful examination of their efficacy and staying abreast of recent literature and research.

Efficacy from a Student’s Perspective

When it comes to students, self-efficacy is core to their academic success. Self-efficacy is a how a person perceives him or herself in terms of their ability to perform a specific activity. It reflects a person’s confidence in performing a particular task. It is not possible to coincide low self-efficacy in one area with high efficacy in another area because self-efficacy is specifically attached to the assignment being undertaken. Even so, high self-efficacy among students does not always translate to their belief and desire to succeed academically. Though self-efficacy is an indicator of a strong believe in their ability to perform well, such students may also believe that there are other factors that could impede their success. Research shows a significant positive correlation between self-efficacy beliefs among students and their performance academically. Where a person’s self-efficacy towards a specific task is low, he or she is likely to evade it. Often, self-efficacy determines the activities that students engage in, the amount of effort they put into those activities and how well they persist when they come across difficulties.
