What is Diuresis?
Diuresis, often referred to as polyuria, is a condition where the kidneys increase the production of urine beyond what is considered within the normal range. Normally, the increase in urine production leads to an increase in urination. In general, diuresis is not a serious condition. However, when the extra urine is not excreted from the body, severe medical conditions can occur.

Urine production in excess of 2.5 liters in a day is considered polyuria.

There are many causes of diuresis, some are common and simple, other causes are more serious like Diabetes mellitus. Common causes are side effects of medication, coffee consumption, higher altitudes, exercise and polydipsia. Polydipsia is the medical term for intense thirst. Naturally when people become thirsty, they drink more, creating a state of diuresis. For people diagnosed with renal failure, diruesis is a sign that the kidneys are once again starting to function. When a state of diuresis occurs spontaneously or without a known cause, there is a reason to spark concern and a visit to the doctor.

One major illnesses common to diuresis is Diabetes mellitus. Unfortunately, one of the major symptoms of Diabetes is polydipsia or extreme thirst, which is a common cause of diuresis. In addition to polydipsia, other symptoms include fatigue, and weight loss.

When trying to determine if urination warrants a visit to the doctor, one should keep a journal, recording each time the urge to urinate occurs. Answers to provide for your physician include, how often urination occurs, what color is the urine, is it painful and is the amount of urine produced the same each day. Also, provide the doctor with information like how often, and exactly how much you are drinking each day and what is the level of your salt consumption in a day.
