What is Diflucan?
Diflucan is known as Flucazone in its generic name and it is used as an antifungal antibiotic. Diflucan is prescribed to patients that need treatment for infections caused by fungus. This fungus infection is known to attack various parts of the body. It can go from any part such as the mouth, lungs, genitalia, throat, esophagus, and bladder, as well as blood.

Diflucan is commonly prescribed to treat candidiasis, or better known as yeast or thrush infection. Thrush or yeast infection may include infection of the throat, vagina, and other fungal infections. When a doctor talks about fungal infection, it may mean infection of the urinary tract. Fungal infection may also cause pneumonia and peritonitis. Patients undergoing a bone marrow transplant are also prescribed with Diflucan to protect their weakening immune system. Meningitis patients are also given Diflucan. At present, the drug is also given to patients who undergone kidney and liver transplants. Moreover, patients with AIDS who had infection are also given the same medication.

Just like many other over-the-counter drugs, Diflucan has known side effects. However, reports of strong allergic reaction with the drug are extremely rare. Below are some of the side effects of Diflucan:

  • Trouble with swallowing and heavy breathing
  • Pain in the abdominal section
  • Loose Bowel Movement or Diarrhea
  • Itching
  • Hives
  • Swelling
  • Sudden drop in blood pressure
  • Patients are advised to see their doctor once the evidence of the abovementioned side effects became present.

    Diflucan is an approved drug. However, there are certain people who are allergic to Flucazone. It is advised that a patient must check the contents of a drug before taking it. If a patient notices any content that they are allergic to, then it is better to discuss it first with their doctor. Moreover, it is highly discouraged to take Diflucan with any medication for heartburn. Doing so may result to certain cardiac problems.

    Several warnings are being given to patients taking Diflucan. Actually, it is your doctor’s responsibility to monitor your liver function at the same time as you take the medication. If you have weak immune system, a rash may be developed. If your condition continues to get worse, you may need to stop taking the drug.

    It is also important for a patient to know what drugs are not recommended to take while taking Diflucan. Below is the list of drugs that should be avoided while on Diflucan medication:

  • Mycobutin
  • Rifadin
  • Rifampin
  • Tacrolimus
  • Prograf
  • Seldane
  • Terfenadine
  • Theo-Dur
  • Make sure you do not miss a drug on the list to avoid decreasing or altering Diflucan’s effect to the body. On the other hand, if you are pregnant, it is also best to consult or inform your doctor about taking Diflucan. Although there is no study or proof that the drug can affect the unborn, it is still better to be safe.
