Diclofenac is a drug that can help relieve various aches and pains in the body. This drug is a member of the NSAID group or the so-called “non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs”. As this name suggests, diclofenac functions to target the inflammation that is causing the pain in various cases such as rheumatoid and osteoarthritis among many other conditions. Many of these conditions involved inflammatory changes in the pain site. In the case of various arthritis conditions, the structures surrounding a particular bone or joint undergo inflammation causing pain and swelling. Through diclofenac, the inflammation will subside and therefore reduce the pain.

The main action of NSAIDS like diclofenac is towards the prostaglandins. These are enzymes that are produced by the body when there is inflammation. Diclofenac will specifically target these prostaglandins and reduce their production leading to cessation of inflammation and its associated symptoms like pain, swelling, and even hyperthermia. There are various drugs and substances that are part of the NSAID group other than diclofenac. Different people with different conditions may also respond in different ways to a specific NSAID. Doctors will basically try to prescribe the most effective NSAID for a particular case and patient.

Depending on the case and preparation, diclofenac may be sourced over-the-counter or prescribed by licensed physicians. This drug is available in various preparations including tablets, capsules, and powder form. There are also topical versions of diclofenac in the form of creams, gels, and skin patches. Oral preparations are typically prescribed for those with severe pain and inflammation secondary to arthritic and other conditions. For cases where there are muscle and/or joint pain, swelling, and tenderness, diclofenac in topical form may be enough to get relief. People with migraines may be prescribed with diclofenac in powder for solution form. People who have history of allergic reactions to NSAIDs should not take diclofenac. Those with other serious medical conditions also need to report possible concerns to their doctors in order to prevent side effects.
