Diclofenac sodium is a drug that is commonly prescribed for patients with arthritis-related conditions. It’s a prescription-only drug which simply means that this drug is not available on an over-the-counter basis. The basic action of this drug is to relieve the pain and swelling that is commonly associated in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis among others. Some doctors also prescribe diclofenac sodium to other medical conditions like sports-related injuries and even headaches. Similar to arthritic conditions, sports-related injuries also involve swelling and pain in the affected area which is targeted by the drug.

Diclofenac sodium is part of the NSAID drug group. NSAID stands for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Many arthritic conditions and sports injuries are given NSAIDs like diclofenac sodium because it is very effective in blocking the action of prostaglandins. Whenever there is injury in some parts of the body, the natural reaction of the immune system is to produce prostaglandins. These prostaglandins will cause the swelling and pain associated with bodily injury. In the case of sports injuries, muscle and bone tissue may be affected because of bruising and cuts. Inflammation will then occur in the affected area and surrounding tissues making it very painful and swollen. Taking in diclofenac sodium will help relieve the pain and reduce the swelling. Being a potent drug, diclofenac sodium must not be taken by people with specific conditions and illnesses. People with kidney problems and those who underwent heart bypass surgery are not allowed to take this drug for possible interactions and side effects. Pregnant women are also given caution before taking this particular NSAID. Doctors also emphasize that patients follow the dosage and frequency as instructed.
