What is Cystic Acne?
Cystic acne refers to the most severe type of acne. In this type, the acne is painful and filled with pus, and is called a “cyst”. This makes the acne more sensitive to touch and more prone to scarring.

Cystic acne is also called as nodulocystic acne, referring to nodules or lumps beneath the skin that may accompany the cysts or pus-filled acne. People who have cystic acne usually feel pain when the acne is touched.

Just like any other type of acne, cystic acne is caused by over-activity in the oil glands, excess number of dead cells near the hair follicles, and by bacteria or dirt on the skin. Others also believe that hormonal changes may play a big part in having skin breakouts. Genes may also be part of the cause, as acne usually runs in the family. Stress and unhealthy food intake are also said to contribute to having cystic acne.

Majority of acne occurs during the teenage years, but people may be affected at any age. It is also more common among boys and young men. But contrary to popular belief, cystic acne does not result from eating lots of sugary foods, drinking plenty of soft drinks, and lack of cleansing. Though hygiene plays a big part in acne prevention, it is not considered the primary cause of cysts and nodules forming on or beneath the skin.

Cystic acne treatment usually is in the form of topical creams and ointments. But for severe cases, doctors may prescribe certain medications with systemic or general body effect. For women, oral contraceptive drugs are said to help smoothen the skin and heal acne. Surgical procedures and injections may also be performed by doctors if deemed necessary. Many are also given advise on lifestyle and diet changes for healthier skins and healthier bodies overall.
