Coconut water simply refers to the juice that can be found in the interior cavity of a young coconut. This juice can be considered as one of the most refreshing natural drinks that is consumed all over the world because of its health benefits.

Coconut water can be obtained by opening a healthy and tender coconut. Inside the coconut, the juice is sterile and contains nutritious substances such as vitamins, sugars, electrolytes, minerals, cytokine, enzymes, phyto-hormones, and amino acids. Generally, the young coconuts are collected from the coconut tree once they are around 5 months to 7 months. Those which are younger than 5 months are not harvested for drinking because the juice inside doesn’t have nutrients and tastes bitter. On the other hand, those which are too mature have less amounts of water and thicker edible coconut meat. In general, one coconut can have 200 ml to 1 liter of coconut water depending on the size and the type.

The coconut palm usually grows in tropical regions. Each coconut tree can produce hundreds of tender nuts for every season, and the taste of the coconut water may vary depending on the salt content of the soil and the distance from the mainland and seashore.

Aside from being refreshing to drink, the cytokines that coconut water contains also have anti-aging and anti-carcinogenic effects, as well as anti-clot formation. People who are suffering from diarrhea are normally given coconut water in order to replenish the fluids and nutrients that are lost from the gastrointestinal tract. This can be considered as a more ideal drink compared to other beverages in terms of preventing dehydration.

Compared to other fruit juices, coconut water contains greater amounts of iron, magnesium, zinc, calcium, and manganese. Furthermore, it is also rich in essential B vitamins, including thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, and folate.
