Bergamot refers to a type of plant which produces nutritious and aromatic citrus fruits that are yellow and have a similar size with that of an orange. This plant originated from South Asia and was exported to Italy, where it is commonly used for both commercial and medicinal purposes. Bergamot was found to have several health benefits such as the reduction of blood sugar levels, arterial stiffness, and cholesterol levels in the body.

According to studies, this plant can regulate the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which is a major contributor to heart disease. Alternatively, bergamot can also increase the levels of high-density lipoprotein, which can produce positive effects. This plant inhibits cholesterol production in the liver and also contains substantial amounts of polyphenols, which can affect cholesterol biosynthesis.

Bergamot can also be used for other purposes, such as for the prevention of lice and treatment of Mycosis Fungoides, psoriasis and fungal infection (along with UV light). Additionally, it is added in suntan oils, soaps, lotions, creams, and other skin care products.

Essential oil can also be extracted from the peel of bergamot and can be used for aromatherapy. The scent can have a calming and uplifting effect, and can be used for stress reduction and for the treatment of depression. An essential oil diffuser can be used or it can also be used as an incense. Bergamot has a sweet and fruity scent which can improve the appetite of people who are depressed, and can also reduce the anxiety of cancer patients undergoing radiation treatment.

Basically, bergamot oil is composed of linalyl acetate and linalol for fragrance, bergapten and furocoumarins for pigment loss, sesquiterpenes for antiseptic properties, as well as alkanes, terpenes, and alcohols. This can be added to water and be used for taking a bath, but make sure to use only small amounts because high concentrations can have harsh effects on the skin.
