Azithromycin is one of the most widely used antibiotics in the world. The medicine is derived from erythromycin, and like all antibiotics Azithromycin is used for curing infections, which are mainly caused by bacteria. There are a number of ailments which are cured by this antibiotic. Ear infections, especially middle ear infection, throat infection, bronchitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis and pneumonia are few diseases which can be cured with the use of Azithromycin. Plus, it is also used in curing a few sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like Chlamydia, Cervicitis, etc.

Azithromycin is found in tablet form, in oral suspension doses of 250 mg and 500 mg and also in intravenous injections. This is an over the counter medicine, but it has to be purchased only after provided with a doctor’s prescription. If one has an allergic reaction to the medicine, it has to be stopped immediately and a doctor needs to be called.

Another thing is that Azithromycin can react with other medicines, so the doctor needs to know about all the medicines the patient takes; this makes it easier for the doctor to prescribe appropriate medicines which will not cause side effects.

An overdose of this medicine can be very harmful, therefore keeping the dosage and timing of the medicine in mind  is extremely crucial. The medicine has a few side effects as well. Common side-effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and other gastrointestinal problems. All patients may not develop these side effects; however, if the problem persists, the doctor must be informed. The doctor may provide more medicines to relieve the patient from the side effects, discontinue the medicine, and give the patient an alternative cure for the disease. It can be taken with or without food; the medicine should be taken only for the duration prescribed by the doctor.
