What is Aquarium Salt?

Aquarium salt is a type of salt used for the treatment of fresh aquarium water, serving a tonic for the fish. Adding aquarium salt to fresh water is supposed to treat certain fish conditions and kill bacteria and parasites who do not tolerate a salty environment. The salt in the water also lower the fish’s intake of toxic materials such as nitrite in the water, and it also lessens pathogens.
Aquarium salt can be purchased from pet stores and ideally should not be replaced with table salt. Table salt, which is designed for human consumption contains iodine and calcium silicate, which might change the hardness of the water. Aquarium salt is very inexpensive and will be carried by most pet shops. In the absence of Aquarium salt, kosher salt is the best alternative.
The recommended dose of aquarium salt to be used is 1 tbsp. per 5 gallons of water. Many fish will go about their normal lives not minding the salt, but certain types of fish like the Corydoras catfish have very low tolerance and may have problems, so care must be exercise with this kind, and with non-scaly freshwater fish species.
