Abortion refers to a process wherein pregnancy is stopped or terminated. This process could either be voluntary or involuntary.  In involuntary cases, most people refer to it as a miscarriage.  In this particular case, the development of the embryo or fetus did not go well which eventually led to the involuntary termination of pregnancy.  In most cases, when abortion is being talked about, people associate it with the voluntary process or the induced form of terminating a pregnancy.

Inducing abortion may be done in two ways.  One common way of terminating a pregnancy is through pills.  This technique is especially applicable to the early parts of pregnancy.  Through the regular intake of pills, female reproductive hormones are regulated and controlled and this will result to an induced miscarriage.  The other way of terminating a pregnancy is through surgery.  In this procedure, the pregnancy or the fetus is literally removed from the womb through surgical means.  In most cases, this surgical type of abortion involves a minor procedure wherein the patient involved is not required to stay at the clinic or hospital overnight.

Many countries around the world do not allow induced abortions regardless if it is done through the pill method or the surgical method.  Advocates of the practice emphasize on the safety of the pills and surgical procedure which is a major issue for some people.  Some religious groups also oppose induced abortion because it represents the killing of the life of the unborn child.  Many countries have debated over the issue of terminating pregnancies and abortion-related procedures and concerns.  Despite being illegal in many countries, many pregnant women still resort to abortion through clinics and personnel that operate under the radar of existing governments and law enforcement agencies.  For many of these people, abortion is considered a choice and a basic right.
