A Chloride Blood Test is an examination conducted as part of a more detailed metabolic test. In the human body, chloride serves as an electrolyte that is important in maintaining a proper balance between acid or base and fluid. The metabolic test also checks the amount of other electrolytes found in the body such as sodium, potassium and carbon dioxide. A correct balance of all electrolytes is necessary for proper functionality of heart, muscles and nerves. It is also important for normal absorption of fluids as well as for excretion. A Chloride Blood Test is necessary to detect any abnormal chloride levels in the blood as a way of diagnosing various health conditions such as alkalosis, a condition where alkaline levels in the blood are either basic or too high or conditions related to acidity levels such as acidosis. The test is also important in for monitoring patients with blood pressure, kidney and liver ailments, as well as heart failure because such conditions often lead to an imbalance in electrolytes.
Signs of Imbalances of Chloride
When there is an imbalance in chlorine levels, a patient tends to experience excess fatigue, breathing problems, weak muscles, and vomits frequently. A patient’s blood pressure may rise and he or she may experience prolonged diarrhea. Patients who are getting ready to undergo a chloride blood test should avoid eating or drinking anything within 8 hours prior to the test. Patients should also stay away from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, hormones and diuretics as these can have an effect on the test results. Patients are advised to inform their doctor of all medication they take, whether prescribed by a doctor or bought over the counter. In some cases, patients may be required to avoid taking some drugs prior to the test.
