A blog is a website (or part of it) which is somewhat of an ‘online diary’, containing thoughts, comments, or documentation of things or events. The term ‘blog’ is shortened form of the term ‘web log’.

To date, it is estimated that there are 112,000,000 blogs existing in cyberspace. This trend began in 1999, when a number of hosted blog tools which made blogging easier were made available for the public, examples of which are: Open Diary, Live Journal and Blogger. The community of bloggers is collectively called the ‘blogospehere’.

Blogging has made a significant social impact in terms of how public opinion is taken into account in certain issues such as news, politics, or mainstream media.

Some of the most popular blogs of today include: Mashable, Gawker, CNN’s The Daily Ticker, and TechCrunch.

Personal blogs ‘“ an actual online diary where users record what goes on in their lives, as well as their personal opinion on different matters. Popular free blog sites for personal blogs include WordPress and Myblogsite.
Corporate or organization blogs ‘“ This is means for corporations or organizations to involve customers, employees or members in discussions related to their business or group.
Blogs by genre ‘“ Individuals or groups can create a blog about certain topics such as music, film, food, politics, fashion etc.
Other media type ‘“ blogging through the mobile phone is called a ‘moblog’ while sites which contain video materials are called ‘vlog’.
