What does CPR Stand For?
CPR is an acronym in the medical field which means cardio pulmonary resuscitation. CPR is an important, life-saving technique that is used in many emergency situations. CPR is a chest compression technique primarily to aid the flow of oxygenated blood in the body in the absence of normal blood flow. A secondary function is to ‘restart’ the heart of someone whose is not breathing or heartbeat has stopped.Additionally, pumping air into the lungs might be done through alternating CPR with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, or an air pump, as commonly seen in drowning cases.

CPR is usually done as first aid in order to delay tissue death and permanent brain damage in individuals. This is done continuously until a person shows signs of consciousness or until a medical team arrives. For adults, a chest compression rate of 100 per minute is advised in order to keep adequate circulation in the body.

The CPR (compression without respiration) only method is advised for the untrained person. Government medical agencies strongly urge everyone to know how to give CPR because it can save lives in emergency situations.
