Bacteria refer to microorganisms that are present in almost any area or habitat on Earth.  From the deep soil under the Earth’s crust to the boundless oceans and seas, millions of these simple forms of life exist. They also come in different shapes and sizes but their most common characteristic is that these microorganisms do not have a nucleus but have its own DNA. Bacteria also have enough RNA molecules which allow them to replicate and multiply.

Many types of bacteria can literally live solitary lives.  This simply means that some types of bacteria can survive on their own without being dependent on other living things for food. Whether they live on air, in the soil, or on water, some bacteria can live and survive the harshest of environments. Some bacteria even thrive on areas where there is very high radioactivity.  There are also bacteria that may feed on other living things to survive.  In the case of bacteria present in the human body for example, some bacteria may actually be of benefit in some ways.  Those that are present in the stomach or gut for example may help get rid of toxins in the body and therefore giving some benefit to humans as the hosts. The bacteria will also thrive inside the human body because of the abundance of the food source.

Most people know of bacteria as harmful to the body as their presence can lead to infections and diseases.  A basic skin wound for example may lead to complications if it gets infected with specific types of bacteria.  Due to bacterial presence, the wound may become swollen and more inflamed causing more pain and discomfort.  The simple bacterial infection may even lead to serious complications which require immediate medical help.  In these cases, strong anti-bacterial drugs or medication may be prescribed for patients.
