Thriller movies are one of the most interesting and exciting movie genres. 2013 saw the release of some major blockbuster thriller movies, with most of the releases being exceptional. Here are some of the best thriller movies of 2013;

1. Gravity
Imagine being stranded in space alone, on your first space mission, after the two other astronauts you came with die due to a cloud debris caused by a Russian missile strike. You have no form of communication with the outside world. It is a battle for survival and this science fiction thriller film lives up to the viewer’s imagination. It is really scary and frustrating, to the point you attempt suicide. Dr. Ryan Stone, played by Sandra Bullock, re-emerges from her suicide attempt after she sees Kowalski, the other dead astronaut, scolding her and becomes determined to return home alive. Gravity is easily the best thriller film of 2013. It is no surprise the movie got 10 nominations at the 2014 Academy Awards.

2. Captain Phillips
It is always interesting to witness Tom Hanks in action. His performance as Captain Phillips is nothing short of praiseworthy. The movie is based on actual events and is a biographical survival thriller film. Captain Phillips, played by Hanks, is in charge of taking an unarmed container ship from Oman to Mombasa, Kenya. Despite the precautionary efforts they take, pirates manage to board the ship and take it hostage. The pirates refuse to leave even after being offered money. The crew of the ship is finally rescued, including Phillips, while the leader of the pirates, Muse, is apprehended.

3. Elysium
Matt Damon is one of the best actors of this generation. He teams up with Jodie Foster and an excellent cast in this science fiction action thriller. The film covers several issues affecting humanity, such as poverty and exploitation of the poor. The rich people live on a different planet, Elysium, while the poor live on Earth. Illegal immigrants from Earth to Elysium are either killed or apprehended. Max, played by Damon, is trapped in a chamber and has five days to live, due to the lethal radiation. He goes to a human smuggler to help him get to Elysium so he can be treated. What ensues is a gripping and emotional tale of fighting for survival.

4. White House Down
This action-packed movie has an A-list cast, including Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx and Maggie Gyllenhaal. John Cale goes to the White House with his daughter, whom he hopes to impress by getting a job in the Secret Service. While in the White House, a paramilitary group forges an attack, taking people hostage. The White House is put on lockdown. What follows is an interesting unfolding of the bravery of Cale’s daughter and Cale’s attempt to stop the attack and save the people who have been held hostage. As the movie ends, it is revealed that the Vice President conspired with the military group to orchestrate the attack.

5. Now You See Me

Now You See Me has a star-studded cast, managing to deliver exceptional performances from some of Hollywood’s biggest names. The film stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Dave Franco. Four magicians are brought together by a mysterious person and given a plan. The magicians go on a number of international shows, performing exciting tricks that cause them to rub shoulders the wrong way with a number of people, including law enforcement. The FBI soon goes on a trail chasing ‘the four horsemen’, as they now refer to themselves but the trail soon goes cold because these magicians are too smart for the FBI.
