How many valence electrons are there in sulfur?

6

It is interesting to know that the valence electrons (VE) are the electrons in the outer shell of an atom.  Needless to say, the valence electrons are the ones involved in forming bonds to adjacent atoms.  Keep in mind that the number of VE is important for determining the number of bonds an atom will form, the number of unpaired electrons, and an atom’s formal charge.  For example, there are 6 valence electrons in sulfur.  The main idea is that the number of valence electrons in a neutral atom is equal to its main group number.
