How many unmarried couples live together?

4.85 million unmarried couples in the US in 2005

It is widely known the fact that cohabitation is an arrangement where two people who are not married live together in an emotionally and/or sexually intimate relationship on a long-term basis.  More and more people decide not to get marry.  For example, in the United States of America in 2005 there were 4.85 million unmarried couples.  It is interesting to know that cohabitation of unmarried couples remains illegal in three states in the US: Mississippi, Florida and Michigan.  Statistics show that in 2007 in the US, 16.4 million households were maintained by two opposite sex persons who said they were unmarried.
