How many tuberculosis victims are there?

8.6 million in 2012

Not too many people know that tuberculosis (TB) is second only to HIV/AIDS as the greatest killer worldwide due to a single infectious agent.  In 2012, 8.6 million persons had TB.  Unfortunately, 1.3 million died from TB.  It is important to know that over 95% of TB deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.  This disease affects also children.  It is important to know that in 2012, an estimated 530 000 children became ill with tuberculosis.  Keep in mind that tuberculosis (TB) is caused by bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) that most often affect the lungs.
