2.75 million

It is important to know that approximately 2.75 million soldiers fought in the Civil War.  There were 2 million for the North and 750,000 for the South.  It is interesting to know that the majority of soldiers North and South had been farmers before the war.  Keep in mind that approximately 211,000 Union soldiers were captured and imprisoned in the South and, unfortunately, 30000 died there.  On the other hand, 214,000 Confederates were imprisoned in the North, and 26,000 of them died.
