How many snake species are there?

Approximately 2900

It is widely known the fact that snakes are elongated, legless, carnivorous reptiles of the suborder Serpentes.  There are approximately 2900 snake species.  More than 20 families of snakes are recognized.  Snakes range in size.  They can be 10cm long or, on the contrary, 8.7 meters long.  It is extremely important to know that living snakes are found on every continent except Antarctica, the Pacific and Indian Oceans.  Keep in mind that there are numerous islands from which snakes are absent, such as Ireland, Iceland, and New Zealand.
