How many sheep are there in New Zealand?

Not too many people know that sheep farming is a significant industry in New Zealand.  Believe it or not,   according to figures reported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, in New Zealand there are 39 million sheep.  What does this signify?  It means a count of about 10 sheep per individual.  Believe it or not, for 130 years, sheep farming was the country’s most important agricultural industry.  In 1982 there were 70 million sheep in New Zealand.
