How many sets of chromosomes are there in a cell starting meiosis?

46

As you probably know, meiosis represents a special type of cell division necessary for sexual division in eukaryotes.  Gametes or spores are called the produced cells.  In animals, gametes are also called sperm and egg cells.  According to Wikipedia, a regular diploid human cell contains 46 chromosomes and is considered 2N because it contains 23 pairs of homologous chromosomes.  There are 2 types of meiosis: I and II.  After meiosis I, although the cell contains 46 chromosomes, it is only considered as being N, with 23 chromosomes.  4 haploid cells represents the result of meiosis II.
