How many satellites are there in space?

It is widely known the fact that a satellite is an artificial object which has been intentionally placed into orbit.  Specialists say that there have been launched approximately 6600 satellites in space.  It is interesting to know that 3,600 remained in orbit.  Needless to say, of those, about 1000 are operational.  This is definitely something.  The rest of the satellites are part of the space debris.  Keep in mind that approximately 500 operational satellites are in low-Earth orbit, 50 are in medium-Earth orbit while the rest can be found in the geostationary orbit.
