How many species of palm trees are there?

2,500 (approximately)

Palms are mono-cots and belong to the family Palmae ( Arecaceae) and are perennial. Most palms are easily recognized by their large, compound, evergreen leaves arranged at the top of a woody stem.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, approximately 200 genera of palms are currently recognized. Palm taxonomists are yet to concur on the concept of what exactly constitutes a distinct palm species. So several large genera need to be revised again. However, the number of palm species is quoted to be approximately 2,500!

Most of these species grow in tropical, sub tropical and warm temperate climates.
