How many NGOs are there in China?

280,000.

The precise number of NGOs in China is unknown; however, according to an article published in 2006 on the YaleGlobal website (a publication of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization), the Ministry of Civil Affairs announced there were 280,000 registered NGOs in China in 2005. Still, it is estimated that the actual number of NGOs in the country is substantially higher – between 700,000 and 8 million.

Hmm that’s enormously leading. If you define NGO as “non-government organization,” the answer should actually be zero. I have met the purported “Mother of NGOs” in China, who constantly reminds people that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) directly controls all organizations in China. NGOs in the Western sense have always been anathema to the CCP, and Chinese NGOs are opaque, cosmetic extensions of the Party’s power and make no pretenses of independence.
