How many mutations are there in cancer?

More than 10000

It is extremely important to know the fact that recent studies have put the total number of mutations in a cancer at more than 10,000.  This is definitely something.  Specialists consider that about 140 genes, when mutated, can drive the development and progress of cancer.  Needless to say, these mutations are the “driver mutations”.  The main idea is that they are often accompanied by “passenger mutations,” abnormalities that occur as cancer progresses.  Passenger mutations do not spur the disease.  Do not forget that tumors contain fewer than 10 of the driver mutations.
