How many melanocytes are there?

Between 1000 and 2000 melanocytes per square millimeter of skin

Not too many people know that melanocytes are melanin-producing cells located in the bottom layer (the stratum basale) of the skin’sepidermis, the middle layer of the eye (the uvea), the inner ear, meninges, bones, and heart. It is widely known the fact that melanin is the pigment primarily responsible for skin color.  Specialists consider that there are between 1000 and 2000 melanocytes per square millimeter of skin.  It is interesting to know that melanocytes comprise from 5% to 10% of the cells in the basal layer of epidermis.
