LVAD signifies left ventricular assist device and it has been approved as a bridge to heart transplantation (BTT). LVAD implantations have recently increased due to the improved outcomes and lower complication rates of the newer devices. The data for the number of LVADs that have been implanted in the United States is available, through the Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (INTERMACS). There were 206 LVAD implantations in 2006, 345 LVAD implantations in 2007, 725 LVAD implantations in 2008, 944 LVAD implantations in 2009 and 1451 LVAD implantations in 2010.
