How many lumbar vertebrae are there?

Mammals have different lengths of lumbar vertebrae, which vary from 3 to 29. Humans have 5 lumbar vertebrae (named L1 to L5), and so do Arab horses, mules and asses. Cats and dogs have 7 lumbar vertebrae. The lowest count of lumbar vertebrae (3) belongs to the Ponginae, or great apes; right whale dolphins, on the other hand, have the highest number of lumbar vertebrae (29).
