According to the Sports Illustrated website, there are officially 2 fatal luge accidents in this sport’â„¢s history. The first death occurred during a trial run at the Winter Olympics of 1964, in Innsbruck (Austria), when the Polish British athlete Kazimierz Kay-Skrzypeski was killed. The second fatal accident took place at the 2010 Winter Olympics, in Vancouver (Canada) ‘“ Georgian athlete Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed while in training.
