How many evacuees have there been due to Hurricane Katrina?

An article posted on the US Bureau of Labor Statistics website estimates the Katrina-evacuee population is about 1.5 million ‘“ this number encompasses individuals aged 16 or older living in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama, who abandoned their homes due to Hurricane Katrina. After October 2006, nearly 65% of the Katrina evacuees returned to their pre-Katrina residences, and over 72% returned to their pre-Katrina counties.
