Being the most cruel and destructive Atlantic hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season in 2005, Katrina was also one of the costliest natural calamity that happened in the United States. Being the sixth strongest among the recorded Atlantic hurricanes, Katrina was one of the five most lethal hurricanes since the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane.

Almost three times the cost the damage brought by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, the cost of the entire property damage reached approximately $81 billion. As recorded, 1464 of these deaths happened in New Orleans. According to the states, there are 2 killed in Alabama, 14 in Florida, 2 in Georgia, 1 in Kentucky, 2 in Ohio, 238 in Mississippi and approximately 1, 577 in Louisiana.
